ANGRY residents claim Preston council has failed to put the brakes on travellers they say have wrecked their park.

On Thursday (19 June) homeowners in Frenchwood held a public meeting in the hope of stopping the unwanted guests camping on the recreation ground.

The move follows plans announced this week by Preston Borough Council to set up a permanent site for travellers to stop them going from park to park.

But Pat Arton, who has lived near the park in Carlton Drive for more than 12 years, has seen the travellers set up camp there four times in the past 12 months.

She said: "I don't think this will stop them. The council will be doing something for the travellers, not for the residents. In the past travellers have used the child's play area as a toilet and thrown rubbish everywhere."

Councillor Ken Cole agrees and he has called on council officials, police and Preston MP Audrey Wise to attend the meeting in Frenchwood tonight to discuss what he wants to see become a 'caravan-free zone'. A council committee voted to establish a piece of land where visitors can stay temporarily on their way through town.
