TALKS are taking place with developers over plans to demolish parts of the unpopular and run down Roman Road estate.

Housing bosses have been holding meetings with private companies with the aim of solving the area's social and crime problems.

The plans put forward include a total redesign of the Blackburn estate and demolition of large sections of housing.

Despite a series of publicity campaigns designed to attract new tenants, hundreds of homes are still standing empty on the estate.

Problems with crime, vandalism and drug abuse have driven out many residents and made houses in the area difficult to let. A special public meeting was called last year in a bid to solve the problems surrounding the area. Residents, police and housing officials took part in the event and it was agreed private developers should be called in to help find a solution to the area's troubles.

A series of schemes and projects have been put forward by developers including moves to redevelop the estate's shopping and community centre.

But housing chiefs want to hold talks with Roman Road residents groups, businesses, local organisations and tenants before deciding which scheme to select.

An advert will also be placed in the trade press asking developers to confirm their interest before the council decides on a firm to carry out the work.

A specially selected panel of residents, councillors and officials will then interview prospective candidates.

The plans will also be discussed at housing and community services committee tomorrow.
