WONDERWOMAN Maggie Tickle intends to celebrate her century in style this weekend - with a slap-up meal.

Maggie (pictured) of Mosley Common, turned 100 on Wednesday.

She is affectionately known as wonderwoman among her friends - reflecting her zest for life.

Close friends Rose and Frank Honeyford will celebrate her birthday with her.

"They are like the grandchildren I never had," laughed Maggie.

Born in Hindsford, Maggie started her working life in the mills at the tender age of thirteen, before she met her husband, Fred.

The couple then went on to run an off-licence in Samuel Street for 25 years, as well as emigrating to Sydney in Australia in the Sixties. But they only stayed a year.

Talking about her experiences, Maggie said: "I've always been working and that's kept me going. We didn't have children because we didn't have time.

"My niece in Australia came over to visit me last week. Unfortunately she couldn't stay for my birthday but I'd go to Australia tomorrow if I could."

Maggie's favourite pass-time is feeding the birds.

"I love the birds", she said. "My mum told me to always feed them. I used to give them egg and chips, and scones and tea-cakes every day - they had whatever I was eating. But someone said that egg and chips was bad for them, so they don't get that anymore!"

"I also love a chat," she added. "I can chat with the best of them!"

According to Maggie her secret to a long and healthy life is to have good food.

"Meals on Wheels visit me seven days a week and my mum always told me to have a good dinner - she was a great cook. Eating well has kept me going!"

"I can't wait till Wednesday" smiled Maggie. "It means I should finally get my telegram from the Queen!"
