GLAMOUR girls are clamouring for a tilt at the Miss Leigh title.

'Miss Leigh Festival' and 'Leigh Festival Queen' competitions are being staged on consecutive days as a highlight of the coming town festival and canal rally.

The contests are being split into age group classes. On Saturday, September 6, the Festival Queen contest is being staged. Judges will choose Leigh Festival Queen (age 16 plus), Junior Queen (12-15), Princess (8-11) and Rosebud (5-7) winners.

Festival spokesman Alan Jones explained:"This will be a charity title and the only duty the winners need to perform is to attend the following day's Miss Leigh Festival event."

On Sunday, September 7, the Miss Leigh Festival contest will be held.

Entries from contestants dressed as they choose are invited for four seperate sections - Miss Leigh Festival (age 16 plus), Miss Teenage Leigh Festival (12-15), Miss Junior Leigh Festival (8-11) and Little Miss Leigh Festival (5-7).

Entry forms are available from Julie Unsworth, 01942 525015.

Another feature of the festival is a six-a-side soccer competition. It takes place on Sunday, September 7 and is open to all teams registered in the Leigh area.

Entry fee is £20 per team on a first come, first served basis. For an entry form ring Dave Redden on 01942 514672, or call in Cannings newsagents, Spinning Gate Centre, telephone 01942 260919.

Also on the agenda is a darts competition - for men and ladies. It will be played in the main marquee on the festival village.

Ladies will play 501 best of three, the men will play 501 best of five.

And the winners of the competitions will play each other in a "battle of the sexes" to find the overall Leigh Festival champion. Event co-ordinator Alan Jones said: "We are hoping that lots of local darts talent will enter the contest, and enter in to the spirit of the Festival weekend especially when it comes to the battle of the sexes."

Entry forms are available from Alf Gardiner on 01942 716182, or Cannings newsagents, telephone 01942 260919.

Event sponsorship, prize donations and trade exhibits are invited for the Leigh Business Partnership brainchild. Call 01204 492990.
