THE Queen's Birthday Honours List has brought greetings to a number of local, well-known people.
A builder, transport chief, comedienne, journalist and musician have been recognised in the awards.
Swapping his hard hat for a top hat when he recieves an MBE for services to the community is 59 year-old Shuttleworth builder Mr Melvin Magnall (pictured).
Mr Magnall, of Millhouse Street, has been honoured for his services to the community. He has just retired after 14 years as chairman of the Bury branch of the Ocean Youth Club.
And it was a double celebration at the weekend when the club awarded him an honorary life membership in tribute to his work.
Also receiving an MBE is Greenmount man Mr William Hanley, deputy manager of Ramsbottom-based TNT UK Ltd.
The honour is in recognition of his 28 years within the freight industry. He had set up Inter County Express in Little Lever with an associate in 1969.
In 1978, and with new purpose-built premises in Ramsbottom, the company sold out to TNT and Mr Hanley remained with them.
Also awarded the MBE is Prestwich-born Mrs Vivienne Harris (75), who set up the Jewish Telegraph with her late husband, Frank, in 1950. It grew to become Britain's only provincial Jewish newspaper.
She has also been involved with the Soroptimists, the Citizens' Advice Bureau, Save the Children Fund, St Ann's Hospice and Jewish charities.
Another Prestwich-born woman has received the OBE - entertainer and comedienne Victoria Wood.
Victoria grew up in Bury and attended the town's Grammar School before going on to establish herself as one of the UK's most popular comedy artistes.
Tottington-born Sgt Paul Wilson (34), has been an awarded an MBE for services to music and charity. He is a member of the RAF Cranwell College Band. He is a keen fund-raiser and has been a member of various bands since he was eight.
