DETERMINED Astley & Tyldesley Cycle Speedway had one Hull of a night. They emerged winners in both their challenge matches at Hull - 94-85 in the senior match-up, 75-44 at junior level.

Lee Smethills and Mike Hack each won three races and there were great efforts from the U16s.

Scorers: Smethills 18, Hack 18, James Mann 14 (+1), Martin Phillips 12 (3), Damien Hack 10 (3), Ben Wells 8 (3), Carl Howarth 7 (1), Phil Cartlidge 5, Lee Mitchell 2.

Phillips, Wells and Hack also did well in the junior match in which the scorers were Smethills 14 (2), Wells 14 (1), D Hack 13 (2), Phillips 12 (3), Mann 12 (1), Howarth 10.

A week earlier A & T fell to their third defeat of the season in the Northern Junior League.

New captain Lee Smethills and Damien Hack were again unbeaten (both 16 points), Carl Howarth had his best match (dropping just one point at 15), Andrew Thorpe and Bernard Boylan recorded their best scores (both 12) and there were fine efforts from Dale Edwards (11) and Patrick Boylan (8).

But Heckmondwike won on 107 points ahead of A & T's 90, Sheffield 35, Hull 32, Bury 26 and Stockport 25.

With a makeshift side A & T were expected to struggle in the Northern Senior Fours.

But they turned in a terrific show to finish second behind Heckmondwike.

Scorers: Mike Hack 11, Lee Smethills 11, Dale Edwards 9, Damien Hack 8.

Score: Heckmondwike 61, A & T 39, Tameside 36, Sheffield 23.

On Sunday (6.30pm) Hull visit Gin Pit for a Northern Junior KO Cup semi-final.

Then, on July 13 (2pm), the club is hosting the Northern U13s, U16s and U19s Individual Championships. Free admission.
