I FIND it quite ironic that in the same issue of the Bury Times (June 13) there is an article about the dedication of the Coastal Forces Veterans Association war memorial and there is also a story about the residents of Knowsley Street who are "up in arms" about it being placed there.

The article about the memorial explains very clearly why Whitehead Gardens was chosen and I, for one, feel very proud that we have the memorial in our town.

I do not think it is "cheap, vulgar and a disgraceful eyesore", rather it is a daily reminder of the importance of the role played by the Coastal Forces in the Second World War and the 1,172 men who gave their lives in the defence of our nation.

I find it a very fitting memorial for those that it remembers.
