A TEENAGER died after a late-night drinking session at the Bury pub where she worked.

The body of Karen Dwerryhouse (18) was found in a bedroom at the Peel Hotel in Rochdale Road where she was a part-time barmaid.

A few hours earlier, Karen had been helped to bed by friends who had been drinking with her.

This week the teenager's shocked mother, Mrs Carol Dodd, had this warning to other young people: "Don't drink too much. That is all you can say to them after what has happened.

"They must always be careful about what they are doing."

Karen, who moved into a flat in Whitefield Road, Bury, several months ago, had only just taken up a job as an assistant at the Rompers nursery in nearby Manchester Road.

Mrs Dodd, who described Karen as "sociable and outgoing," said her daughter was working as a barmaid to earn some extra money.

Police say Karen was involved in a drinking session at the Peel Hotel on Sunday evening during her night off.

A spokesman said: "Because, late on, she was not fit to go home she was put to bed in one of the bedrooms at about 1am

"A few hours later she was discovered dead," he added.

A post mortem has concluded death was due to an excessive amount of gastric juices in the lungs which can be aggravated by alcohol.

An inquest will open today in Rochdale before being adjourned pending a full hearing. A spokesman at the Peel Hotel, who did not wish to be named, said staff were shocked at the teenager's death.

"Karen was a very nice girl. We are all very upset at what has happened. This was a tragic accident," he said.
