IT is incredible that a Labour Prime Minister has given the go-ahead for a monstrosity of a dome - £800 million down the drain for a fantasy to be demolished in 12 months.

Entrepreneurs and investors will be the only beneficiaries of the project.

We could celebrate the millennium by giving £1,000 to every pensioner born before 1928, providing they are still around in the year 2000.

Perhaps we could also give £1,000 to every child born on the first day of the millennium. Does anyone think the low income groups like single parents, unmarried mothers and the unemployed of this country care two hoots about the year 2000?

I will lay Lincoln odds that, for the majority of us, the 21st century will be the same as the 20th century - a struggle.

Many Third World children would like to celebrate the year 2000 with some clean clothes, a damn good meal and a roof over their heads.

Let's not waste money on stupid ideas that only benefit the wealthy.

M McHUGH (Mr), Marlowe Crescent, Great Harwood.
