A 22-year-old man was found hanging in his cell in Preston Prison on Tuesday (July 1) with a piece of torn bed sheet round his neck.
Steven Nuttall had been an inmate for eight days since his remand to Burnley Magistrates Court, charged with burglary.
He was discovered by prison officers at 6.40pm who called in medical staff. They tried in vain to resuscitate him. Mr Nuttall would have been 23 years old a week on Monday (July 14).
He is the third man to be found hanging in Preston Prison since last November. Less than a month ago, 23-year-old Leon Parkinson of William Henry Street, Preston, was also found dead in his cell. A spokesman for the Prison Service said: "There will be an internal prison investigation and a coroner's inquest."
