EVEN today, the ethics of medicine are still ruled by a purely instrumental conception of animals.
They are only considered in terms of their usefulness and advantage to human beings.
Yet, a new sensitivity is emerging in public opinion, especially among the young.
There is indeed much to reflect on when great cruelties are inflicted on animals needlessly and without care.
Other ways to alleviate suffering and save human lives are open to us, and public conscience must demand merciful treatment of sentient creatures.
