STEVE Waugh celebrated the most vital Test century of his career and then sang the praises of the Lancashire League.

The world's number one batsman might have saved the Ashes for Australia with his 102 not out yesterday at Old Trafford.

And afterwards he harked back to his season with Nelson in 1987 and insisted it was one of the most positive experiences in his cricket career.

"The Lancashire League improves you as a player and provides a great grounding for young players," said Waugh.

"I would recommend it to any young aspiring cricketer.

"I was living away from home for the first time and I was made welcome and thoroughly enjoyed it.

"For me, it was a tremendous experience."

Australia resumed on 224-7 this morning after rallying from 42-3 and 160-6.
