CHRIS Waddle has gone to the top of Burnley's wanted list to fill their vacant managerial post

But he is also a target for other clubs, notably Hull City.

The former England star is desperate to fulfil his ambitions of moving into management and has gone on record to say: "I'll talk to anybody."

And Hull are believed to be involved in discussions at the moment with him, following a £2.4 million takeover of the Third Division club.

They see Waddle as the sort of star personality who would be ideal to launch the sporting revolution that is being planned on Humberside, with the town's football and Rugby League clubs at the heart of it.

But Burnley too need a similar sort of cult figure to re-activate the enthusiasm among supporters who have been left stunned by recent events.

It was originally thought that Waddle was on his way to Sheffield United, but that situation is far from cut and dried.

He wants to be a number one and that might not be the case at Bramall Lane, though they are still in the picture.

Hull's presence could be more of a threat, even though Burnley might seem a better bet for a man of his ambitions. Burnley have bigger support and have completed their stadium redevelopment, as well as being in a higher division.

But Hull could have more money to offer, in personal terms and for transfers, following their takeover. Humberside would also be handy as far as his roots in the North East are concerned.

Waddle was unavailable for comment today, but he has said that he believes he is capable of playing at the highest level for at least one more season.

Now 36, his playing ability alone would be a boost to the club if he took over at Turf Moor.

His advisor Mel Stein was also unable to be contacted as his office said he was: "away on business".

There had been strong rumours that an announcement was going to be made from Turf Moor today about the managerial position.

But that seemed to be speculation.

Former Burnley striker Liam Robinson has joined Third Division Scarborough on a two-year contract.

Robinson was released at the end of last season. He cost Burnley a then-record £250,000 fee when he was signed by Jimmy Mullen from Bristol City in 1994 and played more than 50 first team games.

But he didn't produce the number of goals anticipated. Earlier this summer, Robinson had talks with Notts County.
