A MAN died instantly after plunging 30ft from a footbridge on to the bonnet of a car travelling along a busy dual carriageway.

Graham Michael Dunn, 32, who lived with his parents in Rogersfield, Langho, until 12 months ago, left his family's new home before the accident in a "depressed state".

His grieving parents Brian and Eileen and sister Jill have notified friends and family in East Lancashire about the tragedy.

But the family were today too upset to talk about the incident, close to their home in Humber Lane, Kingsteignton, South Devon.

The funeral service will be held at St Joseph's RC Church, Newton Abbot, Devon, on Wednesday.

Mike Harrison, a neighbour of the Dunn family in Langho for eight years, said everyone who knew the family had been shocked to hear of Graham's death.

He said: "He was a nice lad, always very pleasant and polite. His death was a great shock."

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall police said Mr Dunn had either jumped or fallen from the bridge crossing the A380 Exeter to Torquay road at Kingsteignton, South Devon.

The spokesman added: "The accident involved a pedestrian and one vehicle, a Toyota Carina, driven by a holidaymaker from New Zealand.

"The man was dead on arrival at Torbay hospital."

The 19-year-old New Zealander could do nothing to avoid the accident on Tuesday..

Devon and Cornwall Police patrolman Timothy Fleath told an inquest that the Blackburn-born hospital orderly had previously attempted to take his own life and had a history of schizophrenia.

The hearing was adjourned by coroner Hamish Turner.
