CHRIS WADDLE joined Burnley as player-manager today, brought Glenn Roeder with him as his right hand man and the duo immediately set their sights on promotion.

"I think Burnley are a big club and the division they are is a false one," said Waddle, who has signed a three-year contract.

"It wasn't a hard decision, I have always admired Burnley from a young age.

"I have always been interested in how they generate such vast support and I have always been impressed by the club.

"It didn't take much to say yes."

Waddle revealed that he was first approached by Burnley last week and he said: "In football you get a lot of inqurieis. I had been linked with Sheffield United and Hull City but as soon as I spoke to Burnley I knew what I was going to do.

"I had a chat with the chairman and the directors and we got on very well.

"This is one of those clubs which has potential bigger than the division they are in at the moment.

"I had a gut reaction and that was my feeling when the job came up."

As well as a new manager to replace Adrian Heath, Burnley are also getting a player who believes there is still plenty of football in him.

"I played over 40 games last season for various clubs and as I long as I am doing the job I hope to play as many games as possible," he said.

Roeder, still involved with the England coaching set-up, after leaving Watford some 16 months ago, underlined their ambitions. "We want to get out of this division next season.

"Chris hasn't come here to find his feet in the Second Division. He has told me he is here to get promotion.

"If it doesn't happen this year it will not be for the want of trying. That is his enthusiasm for the job. It's nice to be involved in the day-to-day business again after three and a half years in management I was prepared to wait as long as it took for the right opportunity and I completely agree with Chris that this is the right opportunity for both of us."

Burnley chairman Frank Teasdale welcomed Waddle to the club and also introduced the new management duo to around 50 fans who had gathered at Turf Moor.

"We have a big job ahead of us and its our job to give him as much support as we can," said Mr Teasdale.

"We have to start to do a job and we intend to do it. I am sure it is in very capable hands with these two gentlemen. Let battle commence. "It has been an horrendous two weeks but now we are looking at things very professionally and stability is most important at every level of the club."

Waddle admitted he didn't know too much about the individuals already at Burnley, but Clive Middlemass will now revert to chief scout and the back room team will certainly remain unchanged for the time being.

"I tried to watch games when I wasn't playing and I know a lot of faces at the club," said Waddle.

"But we have got some good players and we'll be looking at them closely in the next two or three weeks."

Roeder added: "We will find out if they want to be winners. If they do they can come on the ride with us. If not they can hitch a lift with someone else."
