POLICE were today following up new leads in the hunt for an armed robber after an appeal went out on national TV.

BBC1's Crimewatch UK last night staged reconstructions of two robberies, including one in March at Black Horse Agency and Halifax Building Society, in King Street, Whalley.

Presenter Nick Ross told viewers an armed response unit was on stand-by to respond to any call which could pinpoint the man.

Today, Blackburn-based Detective Chief Inspector Neil Smith, who was in London for the show, said: "We had around 300 calls which is one of the best responses we've ever had for an appeal on Crimewatch.

"We have had a number of names passed on to us, all of which we will be checking.

"Anyone who couldn't get through should contact the local police station today."

The robber has stolen about £35,000 from 12 building society offices in the last 12 months.
