STAFF from Newton Library are appealing for the return of a 19th century cast-iron bell which was stolen in the early hours of Tuesday, June 17.
The bell dates back to 1832 and its original home was at the now-closed Newton Viaduct station. However, it has been at the library for more than 40 years and has become popular with lenders eager to find out more aboutlocal history. Staff have no idea of the bell's value. It was set in a cast-iron display case which was also stolen, along with one of the library's computers valued at £800.
