AFTER successfully battling through to the British Deep Water Finals, Lancaster's water polo team ended their challenge for the title in disappointing style. Several key players were missing which made it extremely difficult to compete against the best teams in the country. As their games went on, defeats continued and players were getting frustrated about inconsistent refereeing. The competition ended with players lacking the eagerness required to compete and a row of poor results. However, on the bright side, Lancaster triumphed against Bristol who were highly tipped for the National League title. Unfortunately, this match produced their only points of the competition as they went down to Portobello 17-10 and London Penguin 15-9.
Their 13-8 victory against Bristol was a good battle when they managed to keep Bristol well at bay thanks to Burgess, Bowers, Hartley, Powell, Detko and some excellent goalkeeping from Baker despite several comeback efforts by Bristol. Lancaster are now left with the task of trying to lift themselves before their first home matches of the season against Penguin on Saturday and Bristol on Sunday. These games will be played in Manchester and Liverpool because the Salt Ayre pool and Kingsway are unavilable.
