STUART Andrew's hopes of making it to the coveted first tee at Royal Troon in Thursday's Open Golf Championship came to nought.

His second round 71, for a 141 total at Western Gailes, left the Clitheroe man a tantalising two shots out of a play-off spot.

"I had a good chance really and I'm disappointed, but I've been here before and at 22 I can do it again."

One under par for the day and two under overall playing the 13th, Andrew's chances disappeared with back to back bogeys at 13 and 14, the latter a miss from four feet.

The 10 footer he holed for a two at 15 which could have placed Stuart at three under without the lapses, thus became meaningless.

The other Clitheroe man Paul Dwyer, added a 72 for 149 at Irvine Golf Club, the same total as Ian Taylor from Stonyhurst Park who shot 76 yesterday.

Paul Carman also finished on 149 at Irvine.

"I dropped five shots at nine, 10, 11 and 12, then finished bogey, bogey.

"It was rubbish" said the Huddersfield Golf Club professional.

At Glasgow Gailes Golf Club Simon Townend could only add a 73 to his opening 70, which left the former Wilpshire professional five shots outside the play-off score of 138.

Scores - W Gailes: 141 S Andrew 70, 71. Irvine GC: 149 P Carman 72, 77; P Dwyer 77, 72; I Taylor 73, 76. Glasgow Gailes: 143 Simon Townend 70, 73.
