A DARWEN couple are in training for a trip Down Under to compete in the world's most gruelling sport.
For Cheryl and Paul Cook have qualified to represent Great Britain in the World Triathlon Championships in Perth, Australia, later this year.
But while the couple are currently training for the three-pronged event which includes a 1,500 metre swim in open water, a 25-mile bike ride and 10 kilometre road race - their biggest hurdle is obtaining funding for the once-in-a-lifetime trip.
Cheryl, 39, a former double English Fell race title holder, and Paul, 40, are both appealing to local companies to sponsor the trip to take on some of the world's fittest athletes.
Cheryl said: "We have some money saved and can borrow if we need to but it would be great if we could obtain funding for this trip which is a superb opportunity to test ourselves against some of the world's best triathletes."
The couple, who both qualified for the event at the recent British National Championship in Ellesmere, ride more than 100 miles a week and spend up to five hours in the pool in order to keep at peak fitness.
While electrical technician Paul, competing in the 40 to 44 age group is hoping for a top 10 place, Cheryl, who will be competing in the 35 to 39 group, has simply set her sights on finishing.
She added: "I'm at the top of my range now so I'll be competing against athletes younger than me so it is going to be very tough. It's difficult for me to say where I'll finish." The couple will be able to call on the help of experienced triathlete and fellow Darwen Master Swimming Club member Roy Stancliffe, 60, who has also qualified for the championships.
