ALAN WHALLEY'S WORLD
ANYONE remember a 'nil-octane' brew known as Sheffield Porter?
That's the intriguing memory-tweaker set by Ged Ashall (67) of Cherry Tree Lane, Moss Bank.
He recalls that, as a lad, he used to pop-up to a temperance bar at Park Road (somewhere between Pocket Nook Street and Merton Bank Road, Parr) to pick up the brew for his dad who regarded it as a real treat.
Ged was sampling summat with a bit more kick to it at a local club bar when he unearthed this nostalgic nugget from the past.
But as it all happened more than half-a-century ago, Ged is a little hazy about the fine detail. He cannot now recall the name of the temperance bar; what the non-alcoholic stuff was made of; or why it had a Yorkshire name. And why, in an anti-booze establishment, it laid claim to being 'porter.'
