ST HELENS Council's Trading Standards Section is advising motorists to steer clear of so-called 'anti-flash' registration plates following the prosecution of a local trader for offences under the Trades Description Act 1968.
Joseph Critchley, trading as the Custom Number Plate Company of Junction Lane, Sutton, had pleaded guilty to two offences of falsely describing his vehicle registration plates as anti-flash (that is making the plates unreadable to police speed cameras).
He was convicted at Solihull Magistrates Court following a joint investigation by St Helens and Solihull officers and was ordered to pay a total of £4,000 in fines and costs.
Ken Wardale, the council's Chief Trading Standards Officer, said: "These anti-flash plates were advertised widely but we understand from the police that they have never been unable to read a registration number yet. No-one should be selling products which encourage motorists to break the speed limit."
