LOTS of lonely people are waiting for volunteers to come forward and give them a window on the world.
The Caring Neighbourhood Scheme, funded by Lancashire County Council, was launched in May by Age Concern to tackle loneliness and create a safety net for vulnerable people.
Volunteer co-ordinator Christine Nuttall of Blackburn and District Age Concern said: "A lot of people want visitors but so far we have not been able to match demand with volunteers.
"We don't want to raise hopes by promising a visitor if we don't have enough.
"We really need more help from individuals, and partner organisations such as churches."
To bridge the gap, Age Concern has set up a phone link to make sure people in need hear a friendly voice at least once a week.
Christine added: "Just an hour each week could do so much to brighten the life of somebody in need and the visits can be easily fit around work and family commitments.
Anybody interested in becoming involved, either via the phone link or as a visitor, should contact Christine on 01254 664242.
