MORECAMBE have won just one of their pre-season friendlies but Jim Harvey still believes his side are on course to mount a challenge next season. In the first game of their pre-season campaign, the Shrimps went down 2-0 to Carlisle United, with dead ball set plays causing the home side all sorts of problems. On Saturday newly promoted Stockport County proved much too strong for the Shrimps with former Everton striker, Brett Angell, scoring two first half goals. County's new boss, Gary Megson, saw Angell bag goals in the 11th and 31st minute. Durkin finished them off in the 38th minute to make it 3-0. Harvey will be disappointed at Morecambe's failure to really test the County keeper.
The men from Christie Park picked up their game on Monday night against Jan Molby's Swansea City, with Mark Shirley getting onto the score sheet in the seventh minute.
It was a much better performance from Morecambe, who looked as if they were finding their feet and getting into their stride. The goal especially lifted them and they more than matched their league opponents.
The pace of Morecambe's young striker Gary Williams caused Swansea all sorts of problems and he let fly with a superb volley that was brilliantly saved by the keeper, Jones.
Shirley's goal came courtesy of a one-two with the impressive Kenny Mayers, which put him clear to slot the ball home. Next week the Shrimps take on Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End.
