WORKERS at factories on the White Lund industrial estate in Morecambe were evacuated and sent home on Wednesday afternoon after an unexploded shell was discovered.
British Telecom engineers spotted the Second World War bomb during digging work at the Southgate end of the industrial estate at about 3pm.
Bomb disposal experts safely removed the shell, which was one foot long and six inches in diameter, despite earlier fears that it might let off harmful chemicals or nerve gases. Police confirmed that the bomb was not live. An area, 200 yards from the bomb was cordoned off and workers at Paint and Decorative Supplies and Storeys were evacuated. Police said it was likely more shells could be unearthed on the industrial estate which stands on the site of an old munitions factory.
