SCHOOLGIRL Nichola McVey is recovering in hospital after suffering head injuries when she fell more than 15 feet from a tree.
Nichola, 11, spent time under sedation on a ventilator in the intensive care unit. She is now on the children's ward at Blackburn Infirmary and looking forward to going home for her birthday.
Mum Mrs Heather McVey, of Emma Street, Accrington, said: "She's been very lucky.
"She's a bit unsteady on her feet but awake and talking."
Heather and dad Tony hope Nichola will be allowed home from hospital this week in time to celebrate her 12th birthday on Monday.
As well as bruising and a black eye, Nichola suffered a wrist injury when she plunged from the tree and landed on the car park of Hyndburn Sports Centre, near her home. The St Christopher's High School pupil was playing with her younger sister Joanne, 8, and some friends when the accident happened eight days ago.
Joanne comforted her injured sister while friend Carolyn Ryan, 11, ran to get their mum.
Mrs McVey said: "Nichola was drifting in and out of consciousness. I stayed with her and Carolyn ran back back to ring for an ambulance."
Carolyn lives in London and was staying with her grandmother, who lives locally.
Mrs McVey said: "Nichola doesn't remember what happened but there's a gap in the tree.
"The branch she was on must have snapped and come down with her."
