PLANNING chiefs were meeting last night (July 24) to discuss the controversial £5 million revamp of Bury's famous Market.
Traders were expected to turn out in force at Bury Town Hall as councillors discussed the plans to build a new meat and fish hall, relocate outdoor stalls and provide covers.
A recent ballot of traders had 49 voting against the plans, 71 in favour of continuing talks and 16 undecided.
Traders have employed experts to put their case, and bitter arguments have split the market in recent months.
Yesterday members of Bury Council's planning control sub-committee visited the site before discussing the proposals last night.
The recommendation of borough planning officer Mr Jim Metcalf is that they give the plans the green light.
The council, in partnership with Mill Gate developers MEPC and traders, won money from the Government's Capital Challenge Fund to pay for the work.
