SOME famous names from the local soccer scene will be competing in the Bury and District Amateur Football League this winter.
At the recent annual general meeting it was decided to run a single division of sixteen teams next season and included among them are Tottington United and Highfield United.
The former have been welcomed back after an absence of two years, but with the exits of Seedfield 'A' and ELPM, who have joined the Bolton Combination, there is the additional boost of Highfield's return to the fold.
Last season's Manchester Premier League champions and Gilgryst Cup winners have turned full circle and gone back to their roots with an Under-19 team.
Old stalwarts Two Tubs, Cromptons, Hargreaves and Tottington Athletic will also enjoy the tussle for the title while the Parks Cup and Spencer Cup will be played on a straight knockout basis in preference to the recent mini-group format.
With all the BADAFL officials having been re-elected for the next twelve months, the league lacks nothing in terms of experience with chairman Bob Casey and secretary Alf Newall boasting more than eighty years administrative work between them.
Other officials are vice-chairman Bill Jones, treasurer Wilf Davison, assistant secretary Phil Taylor and registration / referees' secretary Ron Weaver.
Problems of finding a suitable ground to enable the club to join a higher grade league largely prompted the disbanding of Highfield's successful senior team.
The club was formed 25 years ago following the merger of Anfield United and Hightak but the name lives on as chairman Mick Janicki plans a new start with help from Alan Roberts, Mick Sawden and Kevin Burke, all former Highfield players who have joined the committee.
