STAY-at-home holidaymakers were splashing about in the wettest July in the North West for 13 years.

Torrential rain heralded the first and last days of the traditional Blackburn holiday fortnight.

With an average temperature of 16C, Manchester was only six degrees warmer than Reykjavik, the Icelandic capital - and the forecast was for more cold, windy weather.
