TRANSFORMING Birley Street into a continental-style zone has paved the way to a national award.
Judges in the Street Design 1997 competition, run by Local Government News, were highly impressed that such a small scheme had achieved so much and have awarded Blackpool Borough Council a commendation in the pedestrian environment category.
The aim of the project was to turn Birley Street into a chic, car-free zone with a relaxed continental-style atmosphere.
This has been achieved by closing the street to traffic - except between 8am and 10.30am - and introducing hanging baskets, seating areas and street cafes.
Sculptures provide focal points of interest and all street furniture is finished in the new corporate colours of maroon and cream.
Council leader Ivan Taylor says the Birley Street scheme was an important first step towards improving the quality of the town centre and the commendation was a welcome initiative.
"Birley Street was the first full project to be completed as part of a long-term vision to restore identity, character and quality to the town centre, so we are naturally pleased this effort has been recognised," he said.
"We hope to be able to create an attractive, Blackpool-style character to streets throughout the town which will be appreciated by residents and visitors."
Other streets in the area can look forward to similar make-overs during the next six years with money provided under the Government's SIngle Regeneration Budget.
