POLICE have collected a vast arsenal of weapons following changes in gun law.
The Firearms Amendment Act 1997 came into force at the end of July, banning all high calibre weapons and leaving Lancashire Constabulary with the task of bringing in more than 3,000 guns.
A month later, gun certificate holders from across the county have handed in more than 800 weapons and 42,000 rounds of ammunition. PC Mick Pyke, of the Firearms Surrender Unit, said: "Holding guns over calibre .22 is now illegal, but this period of grace lasts until the end of September."
Certificate holders have been sent information packs on how to hand over their guns and claim compensation. For details contact 01772 410101.
