FIREFIGHTERS rescued a black cat which was thrown off a bridge into the River Irwell.
They clambered down a wall ladder to haul the tiny feline and her three new-born kittens to safety.
The cat had given birth after managing to swim to an island of rocks underneath a concrete road bridge. She was spotted by a passer-by who heard her squeals.
