Boardman's Farm yesterday (July 31) won another prestigious tourism award.

The family-run business in Hawkshaw beat off competition from Chester Zoo to take the Environmental Improvement Award in the United Utilities North West Tourism Awards.

Run by Ken and Jan Barnes, the cottages won the award three years ago.

Mrs Dorothy Naylor, chief executive of the North West Tourist Board, said judges had been very impressed with Boardman's commitment to protecting the environment while developing their facilities and the surrounding countryside.

Mr and Mrs Barnes decided to start on restoration work of the 40-acre site when it was declared a Class A site of biological importance back in 1990.

Said Mrs Naylor: "We were particularly impressed with the way the local community helped in the project."
