DRIVERS have been forced to slow down through part of Nelson because of partial road blocks built by the council.
Traffic engineers who wanted to improve road safety created throttles in four streets in the Southfield Street area, and now the average speed of vehicles has dropped to between 22 and 26 mph.
They opted not to use road humps because Southfield Street is a bus route.Surveys carried out in June and July reveal tea-time drivers are still most likely to be guilty of speeding.
Spot checks at the corner of Ash Street and Manor Street revealed maximum speeds of 40mph by cars travelling towards Larch Street.
The area around Fletcher Street still consistently suffers from the fastest traffic. The highest speed on a tea-time spot check was 44 mph, with just more than 26mph as an average.
