SUPPORTERS of Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School were celebrating the school being reprieved from the axe.
Education Secretary Kenneth Baker ruled against a Lancashire County Council move to amalgamate the school with Fearns CS School, Stacksteads. Parents and staff had campaigned strongly for the 96-year-old BRGS to retain its grammar school status and had sent an 11,000-name petition to Mr Baker.
