GREATER Manchester Police's crack "X-Cars" squad, featured in BBC popular television series, is to be headed by a Bury officer, Insp John Higson.
The 45 year-old father-of-four is leaving his role as head of Bury police divisional traffic unit to take up the position as from next Monday.
He will effectively be in charge of Greater Manchester police's tactical vehicle crime unit, better to known to many as "X Cars".
The work of the unit, in tracing and recovering stolen cars, has been featured in the television series which drew milions of viewers.
In his new role, Insp Higson will also be responsible for arranging and carrying out escort duties during Royals visits and others involving VIPs.
He has 25 years of experience in the police force. In 1991, he came to the Whitefield sub-division before later taking up his position as the head of the divisional traffic unit in January 1994.
Speaking yesterday during his last day at Bury police headquarters, Insp Higson said: "I leave with mixed feelings. I have enjoyed being in Bury.
"But my new job will be interesting and a real challenge and I am looking forward to it."
His successor at Bury will be Insp John Sargenson who is transferring from his present base at Collyhurst to become the head of the traffic unit.
