PETER Martin gave himself a double target as he went into today's Championship clash at Derby.

Lancashire's 6ft 4ins tall paceman was aiming for his best-ever season, both at first-class level and in the Sunday League.

And he said: "It would be great to get 60 championship wickets and to break Wasim Akram's record of 29 for Lancashire in the Sunday league.

"I believe I'm bowling as well as at any time in my career and I want at least four wickets a game from now until the end of the season in the championship.

"As for the Sunday league, I've already got 25 and should get the five more needed to set up a club record. And there's an extra incentive. If I say top of the Sunday bowling charts there's a prize of £5,000." Not for the first time, Martin has blossomed in the absence of Wasim. And, if the Pakistani star is ditched by Lancashire next season, Martin will officially take over the mantle as the side's number one seamer.

"Maybe my confidence is growing. I think I have made a breakthrough this season and I believe I can take a wicket with every ball," he said.

Lancashire had Mike Atherton and John Crawley back from Test duty today, with both stars needing runs before the final Test at the Oval next week.

And they made a terrific start after inserting Derbyshire.

Peter Martin took the wickets of Adrian Rollins (O) and May (23) before Richard Green had Dominic Cork caught behind to for 13 to leave Derbyshire on 46-3.
