CRIME-BUSTING closed-circuit television cameras could soon be heading for Darwen if a request for government cash proves to be third time lucky.
Officials from Blackburn with Darwen Council have met police, traders and a CCTV specialist to help put together a new comprehensive bid.
The latest proposals include provision to capture the whole of Darwen town centre on film. The system would link with the existing CCTV operation in Blackburn.
Coun Sue Reid, chairman of the council's newly formed community safety group, said: "We have already submitted two bids for CCTV in Darwen which unfortunately were unsuccessful.
"We will continue with our commitment to install the cameras and to seek funding for the benefit of traders and shoppers alike."
Paul Isherwood, town centre manager, added: "We are compiling information for a bid so we are ready to hit the ground running if a funding initiative is announced."
Inspector Stuart Coates of Darwen Police has been helping to pinpoint the most effective locations for the cameras.
He said: "I am very excited by the prospect of these new cameras. I have seen for myself from working in other towns which have them what they can achieve."
