CARL Lowther overcame the disappointment of Champagne Prince's fading finish at York on Wednesday by partnering Denbrae to victory in the Tom Cribb Limited Stakes at Leicester the same evening.
The Blackburn apprentice jockey extended his increasingly impressive tally to 34 - 29 this season - with 7-1 shot Denbrae's victory by half a length from Midnight Shift.
They were six lengths back two furlongs from home but both Midnight Shift and Inclination faded in the last furlong.
"I've ridden Denbrae in almost all his races here so it was nice to win on him," said Lowther, 23.
"He has kept just getting beaten on the line over six furlongs so his first trip over seven furlongs definitely suited him."
It was the perfect tonic after Champagne Prince and Danish Rhapsody appeared to cut each other's throat in the opener at York when they set a blistering pace for the 16-strong field.
They were six lengths clear four furlongs out before Lowther took it up as Danish Rhapsody began to go backwards.
But two furlongs from home the field began to eat up Champagne Prince. He weakened and eventually finished seventh. Danish Rhapsody came home 12th but that was no consolation.
"I was very disappointed," admitted Lowther. The pace was probably too quick but he's won from the front before.
"It would have been great to win at York because I love that little horse."
Swan At Whalley is fancied in the 4.45 Malton Training Association Apprentice's Handicap over five furlongs at Thirsk today.
