A LEIGH man could become Britain's best independent baker.
John Waterfield of Waterfields (Leigh) LImited has been selected as one of the three finalists in the Independent Baker of the Year category of the 1997 baking industry awardse.
He must now bide his time until the London final on October 13 when he will be at a gala in the famous Grosvenor House Hotel in the West End to find out his fate.
The glittering event, now in its 10th year, will be attended by 750 leading lights in the baking industry and hosted by TV mimic Rory Bremner.
Garry Parker, editor of British Baker, said: "John has come through stiff opposition to reach the final three. It is a clear testament to his baking skills, especially as the independent baker category is one of the hardest fought."
