FREE school dinners for 18,000 of Lancashire's poorest children were due to be axed.
Thousands of pupils at primary, secondary and special schools were likely to lose out because of a change in the rules, effective from April 1988.
But hard-pressed parents were being reassured that - for the time being at least - free meals were safe.
