JUST a day after being arrested and released Michael Madden found himself back in custody.

A court at Bury heard how police officers were originally called out twice in less than an hour after an argument between the 42-year-old and his girlfriend.

However, the following day, after being released from police custody and given bail, Madden returned to the property in Radcliffe where there was again trouble. Officers were called and this time when they searched Madden they found that he was carrying a knife.

When asked why, he replied: "Because I could not get a gun."

Prosecuting, Mrs Alice Blackburn described how police were originally called to the home of Madden's girlfriend, Barbara McDermott in Radcliffe.

She said: "The defendant was being abusive and she was afraid and called for the police to attend. When officers arrived, Madden was asked to leave and agreed to do so. However, less than an hour later the police were called back and they could see a window in the front door had been smashed. Madden was drinking from a small bottle of whisky and was then arrested."

In court Madden, of Radcliffe Road, Bury, pleaded guilty to unlawfully destroying a pane of glass, being drunk and disorderly and without reason or lawful authority, carrying a bladed instrument.

Defending, Mr Anthony Shimmin said: "My client appreciates the folly of what he has done. Since these offences, Mrs McDermott has been in touch with him and has agreed to see him again."

Madden, who appeared from custody, was given bail to appear before the magistrates again on September 18 in order to allow reports to be prepared.
