TRAFFIC police were gearing themselves up for a burst of Bank Holiday motorway mania.
They were predicting four-mile tailbacks on the M6, delays of up to two hours and plenty of frayed tempers.
Police were stepping up patrols to catch careless drivers at the bottleneck where the M61 joins the M6 near Samlesbury - the spot where the worst congestion was expected.
