WINNERS of the "Oscars" awarded to Northern amateur actors are starring in Bacup Amateurs' next production.
The society is staging Bill Macllwraith's black comedy 'The Anniversary' at Bacup Empire from September 10-13, with the leading role of Mum played by Sheila Haworth, last year's winner of Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 'Stepping Out' at Bacup.
Youngest son Tom is played by Mark Storton, a previous winner of Best Supporting Actor for his part in 'Journey's End' by Burnley Garrick Club.
Son Terry is played by Andy Greenwood, nominee for Best Supporting Actor in Rossendale Players' production of 'Groping for Words.'
Completing the cast are Janice Purslow as Karen, Elaine Ives as Shirley and Roy Starkie as Henry.
Director is Stanley Whittaker who directed last year's production of 'A Christmas Carol' for the society. The play revolves round Mum whose mix of charm and evil helps her to manipulate the family business and keep a tight hold of her three sons with threats, gifts and ruthless exploitation of their weaknesses.
As the family is unwillingly brought together to celebrate Mum's wedding anniversary, regardless of the fact that Dad died years ago, revolt is in the air.
The author uses comedy to bring home family truths and expose the skeletons in the cupboard.
Tickets priced at £4 with concessions for pensioners and children are on sale from Martin's paper shop, Bacup, J and M Martin, Sweet 'N' Herbs, Stacksteads, A and J Forshaw Newsagents, Waterfoot or from the ticket secretary on 01706 874380.
