THE long-awaited route for the M6/M65 link road was announced by Peter Bottomley, Minister for Roads and Traffic.

But he resisted pressure from Lancashire County Council to build the link as a motorway.

The £51 million road, known as the Blackburn Southern By-pass, was to be built as a 12-mile dual carriageway only.

The announcement ended years of uncertainty.
