RAINFORD CC fell 20 runs short of victory in a hard-fought game against Skelmersdale.
Batting first, Skelmersdale soon found themselves in trouble at 20-3 in the face of some hostile bowling by Aussie Troy Martyn.
Phil Schofield kept it tight at the other end and Phil Curran chipped in with a couple of wickets. However, some late-order hitting enabled the visitors to reach 166-7 off their allotted overs. In reply, Rainford made a solid start as Campbell and Martyn put on 45 for the first wicket. At 92-3, with Campbell still at the wicket, Rainford appeared to be coasting. But four quick wickets reduced them to 93-7.
However, some bold hitting by Hilton and Curran ensured the game went to the wire. Unfortunately for Rainford, they fell 20 runs short.
Meanwhile, the second team recorded a fine victory at St Philips.
