A GYMNASTICS group which has produced a series of champions in its 23-year history is about to move home.

Darwen Gymnastics Club, which has been in the town since it started, has been forced to move after facilities at their Percival Street base began to deteriorate.

But although temporary accommodation has been provided at Blackburn College's Harrison Institute, club leader Mike Crane says he will be sad to leave Darwen.

Over the years the club, boasting members aged between four and 25, has turned out three British champions who have represented Britain at the World Championships and scooped several other trophies and titles.

Now the 80-strong private club is hoping to return to the town which has been so loyal to them - with a little help.

Mike said: "It's very sad that we have to leave Darwen because we have developed a strong relationship with the community. But Gillibrand Mill, where we practice, has become dilapidated and we are concerned about the safety of our members.

"We are very grateful to Blackburn College but if there is any way in which we can lease appropriate accommodation in Darwen we would love to do so."

Mike expressed interest in the former Moorland School and said the Sports Council has made cash available for them to renovate any building they decide to lease.

He added: "The problem is that we need room to practice on a day-to-day basis. Ideally, we would like to share with another sports club."
