SUPERMARKET shoppers are in for a real-tail treat.

ASDA aims to add a huge11,500 square foot extension to its Atherleigh Way superstore in Leigh.

And at Tyldesley Somerfield Stores is building a 26,000 square feet food store on 2 acres of the Caleb Wright's Barnfield Mill redevelopment site.

Plans for ASDA's Leigh store extension have been submitted for approval showing the addition to the south side of the existing building.

It will mean revising the store's car parking provision and introducing and plans include introducing bus service facilities alongside.

ASDA manager Andrew Holden said:"We need more retail selling space and this will make shopping easier for customers.

"By more efficient use of white lines we can maintain the amount of car parking spaces."

And the store development planned for Tyldesley will mean a new entrance off Shuttle Street and a pelican crossing which locals have long been campaigning for.

Planners are insisting the pelican crossing be operational before the store opens.

The store will be sited on the north western corner of the old mill site, part of which houses are being built on.

And because of the town centre's northern downhill gradient the store will appear at single storey level viewed from Shuttle Street, but with basement storage and servicing on the Ellesmere Street side.
