DISABLED pensioner Dennis Marsden who spent months as a prisoner in his own home because of a step - has thanked the Lancashire Evening Telegraph for his new-found freedom.
Dennis contacted the paper after Blackburn with Darwen Council had failed to lower a step outside his home, stopping him getting out on a new disabled scooter.
He said: "I honestly believe that if it hadn't been for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph I would still be stuck in my flat waiting for the council to do something."
Dennis, 71, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, lives in Pendle House, Larkhill flats, Blackburn, with his wife Joan, 72.
After a story appeared in the paper, coupled with calls from Kevin Durkin at Age Concern, Blackburn, the step was lowered. After venturing out on his scooter for the first time, Dennis said: "I was a prisoner in my own home.
"I might as well have been in jail.
"I have a lovely flat but when you are stuck in 24 hours a day and can't get out it is so frustrating.
"I am so happy now. I have met old friends and gone out for lunch.
"It has made such a difference just being able to get around.
"We are even hoping to get away for a couple of weeks' holiday."
