RESIDENTS fighting against a controversial road widening scheme in Preston got their protests back on track when councillors threw out the plan.
But although Preston council has repeatedly objected to an extra lane on busy London Road, the final decision lies with Lancashire County Council.
It may decide to carry on with the scheme - linked to a park-and-ride car park at Walton-le-Dale - against the wishes of locals.
Preston's Highways chairman Councillor Jonathan Saksena said: "An extra lane would add to congestion. There's almost universal opposition to the road."
If the extra lane goes ahead, houses would have to be demolished and traffic would be brought much nearer to remaining properties.
A county hall spokeswoman said: "No decision has been taken. We are seeking the views of both local councils and others." The county council is to consider the road scheme in October.
